The CNF was introduced with its 2 sub Aff's the BHD and CIA a few months after the game started to oppose the empire.
For several hundred years the human empire was united and lived in relative happiness. The empire ruled over the people unopposed and even though it wasn't a democratic system it prevent people feuding when the current ruler stepped down or died as it was obvious who was next to rule. However When Emperor Paul died the galaxy was unsure who to follow. there was Jasil the emperors second son who all his life had been prepared for the post or Samuel the emperors illegitimate first son who had been raised by the Brotherhood? According to the traditions of the empire, Samuel was the rightful heir whatever his background and should be the ruler however the noble houses and Mega corporations backed Jasil as emperor and so on the Emperors death Samuel was forced to flee the capitol world Sparta aided by the CIA who remained loyal to him. As word got out many thousands of people left the empire in any craft they could find to join here leader. This convoy of ships found its way to the Darkfold system where the Brotherhood had setup. Samuel began to rebuild a empire of his own in the hope that one day he can regain his lost throne. For the first few weeks after the escape people kept on flocking to the confederate cause but soon momentum ran out and the Confederates were never heard of again.....
In secret they built up large colonies and a fleet of warships of there own. From the Darkfold systems the Confederates setup there own inner empire which like the empire they protected with a huge ring of asteroid armed weapons. When the imperials finally made it into the outer empire the confederates were taken a bit surprised. The Imperials had entered through the Capellan system and had time to settle before the CNF patrols spotted them. Since then the CNF and IMP have been at war, both sides fighting for the control of the empire. Initially the combat was small due to the ships available. When the IMP introduced the Patrol Cruiser for the first time one side had an advantage. However it was not long before the CNF obtained a copy of the design from the DTR and renamed it the Frigate to even the score and so the war went on.
At the time the only way into the Darkfold system was through a wormhole which required a code only known by the Darkfold affiliations. This made there colonies safe and allowed them to operate and raid in Imperial space and quickly retreat once the operation was over. When the permanent link was found the CNF and its allies halted offensive operations to secure there systems. This temporary cease fire lasted for over a year. When it was over both sides had become well established and very strong. The CNF had finished the designs of there class 8 ship the Battleship which the IMP quickly copied for there Ship of the Line. The CNF formed the Rolling Thunder fleet, probably the most famous fleet in the galaxy, made up of Battleships used in offensive actions against the empire. The Confederates since then have been attacking and harassing the empire deep within its enemies space having experienced little retaliation.
The CNF is one of the strongest military affiliations in the game, its members although free to do exploration and colonization are usually combat orientated. The CNF works closely with its sub Aff's the CIA and the BHD and are a very active affiliation in the game. There well established chain of colonies means it wont be long before your first battle.....

3) The CNF operate the Battleship 28/80/30 B.S. 1.6 It suffers half morale loss but limited to 500 mu's in cargo.
