The DNA was formed as an alliance of native races, banding together to fight against the humans and other races that had entered the periphery, and subjugated its people. Although from many planets, the majority of the affiliation hails from Naplia, or Utopia MCXVI, as the humans call it. About halfway through 193, the Naplian technicians at Free State of Naplia completed construction of the first Naplian-designed starship - the Hulk. Aptly named, the ship resembled little more than a few dozen starship hulls dropped on one another, then welded together. The Naplians were Inordinately proud of the ship, which was larger than the biggest standard human vessel of the time. It's one redeeming feature was that it could be built at any colony, provided it had one shipyard present. The design filled the hearts of most humans that saw it with terror; the very thought of even trying to get it off the ground was enough to make most break out into a cold sweat. Used to adversity, and taking risks, however, the Naplians loved their ship design, and more soon followed the prototype. At about the same time, the Naplian colonists still scattered across the surface of Utopia began construction of another ship. Initially intended to be their flagship, it was discovered that they lacked sufficient parts to produce the intended design - so scavenged what they needed from the waste dumps of EEM Hypso's shipyards. The finished ship, a one-off, was labeled the "Garbage Scow".It was at this point that President Squidy made his first error. He authorized a series of liberation strikes on the surface of Naplia, specifically at the human colonies; bombs were used to blow up shipyards, complexes, even hiports. Naplian agents dispersed into the populations of the colonies, and sought out captains fresh from the Inner Empire, seeking donations - even attempting to recruit them to the Naplian cause. This met with little success, however, and it wasn't long before the EEM took notice. Because of their activities, DNA Free State of Naplia's hiport was brought down, and the DNA was banned from trading with any human starship or ground party.
This caused the DNA to re-think it's philosophy. Up to this point they had taken a very hard line in relation to the residence of non-native races on planets, but the EEM had grown to such a size that it could influence every human affiliation, effectively cutting off the very support the DNA had to pay highly for in the first place, to continue their struggle. It was decided that merely fighting for a cause was not good enough, unless people knew what the cause was as well. In late 193, President Squidy announced the DNA as rightful owners of, at the very least, Utopia, and in fact of the whole Capellan Periphery, on the basis that the Naplian people were there first. This more responsible stance, along with the almost complete cessation of hostilities, encouraged the EEM to talk terms with the DNA. However, a peaceful ending was not to be. At the end of year 193, in a week known to the DNA as Requiem Week, the Imperial colony Sevastopol in the Mattalot system launched a missile strike on it's DNA neighbour colony, Squidygrad. While this attack did little or no damage to the colony's military might, it did practically wipe out the population. The few survivors did manage to launch a retaliatory strike, which destroyed the orbiting IMP starship Sledgehammer, although this was little recompense for the loss of Naplian life. Over the next two years, the Naplian race gradually became less and less active, until eventually, the DNA fractured, and separate factions joined other affiliations. The more democratic citizens chose to join the Detinus Republic, and took three of the DNA's starships with them - the Garbage Scow, the Far Courier (Which was a unique ship, salvaged from an alien shipyard, repaired, and altered to allow Naplians to fly it), and one of the Squidy Class Hulks (The Hulk class starship was later renamed "Squidy Class Hulk" after the Naplian's illustrious leader). This last ship was later destroyed by a pirate raid, and although the Far Courier is still in the capable hands of the DTR, the whereabouts of the Garbage Scow are as yet unknown. Another part of the race found solace with the Kastorians, who offered them asylum on the surface of one of their home planet's moons, named Mobile Bay, under the proviso that they would never enter into hostilities with other races again. The more xenophobic segments of the race, which, admittedly, is a larger portion, joined up with the Flagritz race. This included the remnants of the colony Free State of Naplia, which, along with the surviving natives from the planet's surface, and President Squidy, evacuated to what they thought was the relative safety of the DNA colony Retreat, which soon after started to fly the FGZ flag. Little was thought of this, until later...
In late 198 the DNA re-emerged into periphery politics. A solitary figure, Landoor Uridium had been lobbying the Naplian refugees on Mobile Bay for reformation for some time. After many months, the first new Naplian starship, a Surveyor, launched from KAS Rubis. After a process of consolidation, this first starship aided in the funding of a second, and a third, and then a new character entered the arena; Pallas Maunder, a fighter pilot in the old DNA, managed to fund the construction of another yacht, and with the aid of the new DNA government, had the ship upgraded to Free Trader by the AFT within weeks. During their long exile, Naplian technicians had made advances on the old Hulk class starship. With the rapid advances in ship technology around them, the DNA engineers were able to produce the Mk II Garbage Scow. Still looking like a pile of scrap metal that has been welded and riveted at random, the new Scow dwarfs it's ancestor, and indeed, most other ships.
Early 199 that a sickening discovery was made. The Flagritz Empire, long in conflict with other races, lost control of the ex-DNA colony of Retreat. The Dominion eventually captured the colony, and the new governor discovered that there were NO Naplian civilians present - despite there having been over 180,000 previously. After further investigation, it was discovered that all of the Naplian people present had been genetically altered and surgically mangled, to appear like some evil mockery of the Flagritz lifeform.
In-depth investigation discovered that it would be impossible, even for the biochemical technology-gifted Naplians, to revert the lifeforms back to their original state, and so the Democratic Native Alliance had no choice but to declare the former Naplian colonists as officially dead. Their loss was mourned. Other DNA positions tried a more practical response, and invaded FGZ Fessin Rahm, but this brought a swift response from the Kastorians, resulting in a DNA ban on the Kastorian systems. Mobile Bay was evacuated, and the power base moved to Solo, and the DNA can never repay the debt owed to all those of many affiliations, who aided us.
More recently, another crisis threatened the affiliation. In late 199, the Commander-in-Chief retired unexpectedly, leaving command solely in the hands of a newly-recruited human starcaptain. Lieutenant Bridge has never been comfortable in the role, insisting he is only 'Acting Commander-in-Chief' until a replacement who actually wants the job can be found. In the meantime, however, he is in charge, and is trying to make a good job of it. Under his leadership, the DNA is becoming a more thoughtful, cautious nation, although still comitted to the dream of self-determination.
The DNA has no interest in war and conquest, knowing only too well what it means to the losers, but wish only to live where they are welcome, with the right to determine their own destiny. For this reason, DNA Law does not recognise slavery. This is not to say that the DNA will shrink from battle if necessary, as some have found to their cost. The Naplian nation has never lost touch with its simple agrarian roots, with many DNA citizens still dressing and living (as close as possible) as their ancestors did, before humans came to the Periphery.
The life of a DNA captain is one of self sacrifice and immense hardship. One minute you can be trading next you will be required to come to the aid of a oppressed alien race. One of the few affiliations with a honorable cause to fight this is one affiliation you will never be bored in...
